Today, Sega announced the name of the follow-up to the highly successful Mario & Sonic At The Olympics, the 5th highest selling game of 2008. This time the competitive duo (and friends) will be battling it out in the winter sun – yes, it’s Mario & Sonic At The Winter Olympics! The best news is that the Wii version of the game supports the Balance Board.
The game will be released later this year to coincide with the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, which is where the game is set. I wonder how the Wii Board will be used? Skiing is obvious, perhaps some bobsledding too?

The joystick is used for any kind of activities that require the child to lean backwards, forwards, left or right. Games, which will feature well loved Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh, will also aim to educate as well as exercise. It comes with eight different built in games that will help to teach kids about Mathematics, problem solving skills and phonics. The Zippity plugs straight into a television and works independently of any games console. With childhood obesity on the up, the Zippity will no doubt be snapped up by health conscious parents who are eager make sure their kids get enough exercise. When it’s released later this year the Zippity is expected to retail for around £55 additional games costing around £17.

They say that exercise keeps you young, but, if you’re getting on a bit, could a few Wii Fit sessions a week be enough to keep you in tip top condition? Well that’s exactly what researchers at the University of Aberdeen and NHS Grampian are trying to find out. They’re looking for some over 70’s that are prepared to help them with some pretty fun, and potentially lifesaving research into the impact of Wii Fit use amongst the elderly. Around 90% of geriatric hip fractures come about as the result of falling, and this study is trying to determine what impact regular use of the balance board can have on an old person’s ability to remain upright. The study, which is being funded by the British Geriatrics Society, hit upon the idea of using the Wii balance board after they were unable to raise enough money to cover the costs of the expensive, specialised equipment that they were originally going to use. So, if you’re over 70, live in the Aberdeen area and have, in the last year, had a fall, they’d like to hear from you. Give them a call on 01224 556789 and they’ll arrange an assessment to work out whether you’re a suitable candidate.
